Old Perithia: an enchanting village in NorthCorfu steeped in history and charm
📏 Distance from Villa Claire Corfu: 59 km
⏱️ Driving time: 1h 22 minutes
Beneath the stunning Mount Pantokrator is Paleá (Old) Períthia. A village bursts with history and character. Founded around 1350, it’s the oldest continuously inhabited spot on the island. Old Perithia has roots that stretch back to the 14th century. Once upon a time, this village was Corfu’s wealthiest, boasting around 130 beautiful Venetian-style homes and eight churches by the mid-17th century.
Back in its prime, Old Períthia was a safe haven from pirate attacks. The locals had a clever setup. They could “see the sea but not be seen,” which gave them a leg up against any pesky raiders. But as tourism took off along the coast in the 1960s, many residents moved to more accessible areas.

In 2010, a passionate couple Saskia and Mark set out to revive this hidden gem. They lovingly restored three crumbling ruins. They dedicated twelve years to breathing new life into the village. Today, Old Períthia is a shining example of resilience and community spirit.
This unique destination welcomes everyone to explore its rich history and its stunning beauty. It’s truly one of Corfu’s best-kept secrets, just waiting for you to discover!
